Barmy Army Tour

Cashy, Bob & Dave hit Australia for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests in the 2006 Ashes, great fun all round thanks lads.

Below is movie of some of things we got up to...

Can you believe it after the awesome time canyoning in the Blue Mountains and all those great pictures... the camera was waterproof but it didn't have a flash! So with no exposure the pictures haven't come out so well but hopefully the ones below will spur your memories on.

Enjoy.

Day 196 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Went to Pearl Jam concert, great fun but venue management need to sort out issues surrounding beer; speed of service, quantity permissible, quality, and the ability to take it into the arena!

Pic and vid to follow...

Day 182 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Ouch.

Just spent 4 days in Noosa, Queensland, with the boys (Jarosz, Stevie the Pom, Cam, BGJ and Fanta), the pom booked us a great penthouse with superb views and all the facilities etc (except we ran out of toilet paper by Monday!!!).

As soon as we arrived on Friday morning we hit the Reef Bar (this would become a recurrence) and started pounding the beers. It’s all a bit sketchy but I think we ate there at some point, Jarosz placing the 1st punt that Fanta would order oysters and ten minutes later that's exactly what he did and they were great in some whisky and Worcester sauce...

Then we hit the Kuala Bar down the hill... more drinking and some dancing this time... typically numbers fell one by one and it was Jarosz who was playing Cinderella this night...

Now in Queensland unlike NSW they don’t use Daylight savings! Stupid as hell and I wondered why Sydney-siders would crack jokes at the Queenslanders and now I know why, apparently one of the reasons they don’t use it is it upsets the cows!!! Ha ha growing up on a dairy farm I have never heard anything so stupid. Can I get that word into this sentence any more times?
Anyway the upshot is that Jarosz and I were up by 06:00 hrs so we quietly snuck out and walked into town where we found the pie shop opening up and stocking up for the day, 2 pies later we headed to the Butchers again loading up for the day and cleaning the floor, I poked my head round the corner and asked if we could buy some bacon, 24 rashers and 12 eggs later we were heading to the 7/11 for some bread, a tomato and a tin of beans. At this point we were never going to walk back up the hill so we picked up a cabbie half way through his shift, a pleasant story teller who was describing the women he’d picked up this morning…
So back to the penthouse by 07:00 and the smell of the bacon on the BBQ eventually got everyone else up and the Crownies were flowing. Problem was the pub didn’t open until 09:00 hrs so we spent two hours studying the days form…

Much more commentary to add to this but I really am not in any form of good shape right now… perhaps another time…

Day 168 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Went sailing today on Al’s folk’s boat, a great 46ft not exactly tan weather but that’s cool and it was fun sailing weather.

Day 150 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Managed to get out on the water today, rather than in it, as the 2nd of October is Labour day in New South Wales, Australia.

A leisurely start to the day at about eleven down to the marina for some scrambled egg breakfast and a good coffee, then on to the Beneteau 33.7. The day started with a gentle breeze which gradually picked up.

We made it a little bit further than expected... to the South Pacific Ocean! Where we did two runs or so before our boat really began to feel rather small and we turned back. Just at this point we decided to put a reef in and we managed this just in the nick of time as two minutes later the wind picked up and we quickly had some serious sailing to do.

Amazingly we made it all the way back from the mouth to Rushcutters bay with only 3 tacks!

Oh yeah, just as we made it to the Ocean a great old ship was coming in and I managed to grab some pictures. I will post them as soon as they are developed, (using someone else’s camera).

Great day followed with some roadies at the Cruise in Circular key, then home for a massive steak!

Engine On a Chip May Beat the Battery

Now this is cool...

MIT researchers are putting a tiny gas-turbine engine inside a silicon chip about the size of a quarter. The resulting device could run 10 times longer than a battery of the same weight can, powering laptops, cell phones, radios and other electronic devices.

Day 80 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Hello family,

Just a quick email to let you know how I am getting on; very well

See you soon

George

Nah, only joking!

Been out plenty and showing the Rugby lads how we get on it back at home, still discovering new quality pubs. Not made it to the beach yet, closest was about 300 meters but we went to a top Sunday pub for the day instead (The Clovelly Hotel). I could see the sea from the terrace though so that counts…
There is another pub (Coogee Bay Hotel) just down the coast on the beach that I need to spend the day at but it is winter here so there is no rush.

Aaron has been over for a fortnight recently so again he has given us a good tour of town darkest secrets. Week before last he played 5th grade so I played too to get a game in together then we hitched a ride across town so I could play again in the 1st team. Pics below/attached… I think this is what they call open running rugby weather and I was like a pig in muck!

Note how in the morning game Aaron the Winger is spotless compared to me the flanker!
Oh broke the line and ran 50 meters to score a try in that game too!

Day 45 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

Just returned from visiting Melbourne for the weekend and I must say I was impressed; went with Lewis from the Shammies and we had a cracking time, Lewis “Norris McWhirter” Cove was extremely nervous we were arriving too late on Friday and would miss all the action, but after finding a suitable bar (it served alcohol) we pushed hard, got totally smashed, talked a load of rubbish, put the world to rights and made it to bed at about 05:00 hrs…

Saturday was followed with the perfect start; a T-bone steak, egg, chips and a salad with a Crowny beer ($10) for breakfast at Mac’s, a quality pub that just looked the best especially when flanked by modern towers…

Then it was on through town, a little closer to the action and in search of more hospitality. We came across Young and Jackson which had a comical start; two pommies wearing white England shirts walk blindly straight into the middle of a sea of Australians wearing gold! Cracked a laugh that did and I’m just thankful we are not a football crowd!
We ended staying there for more than a couple and another good pub indeed.

We managed to visit another half dozen pubs from here on but it all starts to get a bit sketchy, the Sherlock Holmes was decent enough and excellently tucked away in the basement… Norris would have more to say on this place or rather it’s bar staff…

Finally get to the Australia v England game where the tickets came from the Shammies coach and we didn’t really think it through; we were on the second highest row in the stadium - nose bleeding section, surrounded by Australians (not one other pom up there) mainly using binoculars and we were very merry from drinking so early and at a strong pace.

Norris wants to get a video of the game as he can’t remember seeing any of it! – Not that you would want to though, we were trash.
Ah it was all fun, we gave it plenty of banter and the Aussies were all laughing with us (I think) as the game went on we were just hurling abuse at England…

Also who the hell are Angola and Ghana?!?!I had a seven game accumulator on dead certainties returning 13 to 1, but Angola messed that up so to cover my loss I made another and larger 3 game accumulator at 4 to 1 and Ghana messed it up!Not happy; may recoil from actually putting money on again, at least until the next round…Go the Poms!

Cheers

Day 42 in the Big Antipodean Adventure

So everything is flying out here, I have recently sorted a flat out and I am now living bang in the middle of Sydney, it is officially 23 minutes door to door to my office in North Sydney and I am minutes from anywhere!

Below I've taken a picture of the view from my office overlooking the Bridge and the Opera House, nice.

Went to watch England get thumped by the Aussies last Sunday and needless to say that was deflating. The stadium, the bars and the morning spent beer tasting were all quality though!

Off to Melbourne after work tonight for two a half days as a mate from the rugby club had a free ticket to the game on Saturday, guess I am a glutten for punishment... hopefully England can't get any worse...

Thoughts for the day

10 - Life is a sexually transmitted disease.
9 - Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
8 - Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see one without an erection, make him a sandwich.
7 - Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
6 - Some people are like a Slinky... Not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.
5 - Health freaks are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
4 - All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
3 - Why does a slight tax increase cost you 50 quid and a substantial tax cut saves you 50p?
2 - In the 60s, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and People take Prozac to make it normal.

AND THE NUMBER 1 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: We know exactly where any untaxed car is located among the millions of cars in Britain. But we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the DVLA in charge of immigration...

Irish Ghost Story

Try to stay calm when you read this - and maybe ask someone to accompany you home.

This story happened about a year or two ago near Aughrim Co. Galway(Ireland), and even though it may sound like something out of the X Files or from Alfred Hitchcock presents? its real!

This guy drives from Ballinasloe to Kilreekill and decides not to take the new A road, as he wants to see the scenery. The inevitable happens and when he reaches the outskirts his car breaks down - he's stranded miles from anywhere. Having no choice he starts walking on the side of the road, hoping to get a lift to the nearest human habitation. It's dark and raining and pretty soon he's wet and shivering. The night rolls on and no car goes by, the rains are so strong he can barely see a few feet ahead of h
im.

Suddenly in the distance he sees the headlights of a car coming towards him and it slows and then stops next to him - without thinking the guy opens the car's door and jumps in.

Seated in the back, he leans forward to thank the person who had saved him when he realises there is nobody behind the wheel!!! Even though there's no one in the front seat and no sound of any engine, the car starts moving slowly. The guy looks at the road ahead and sees a curve coming (remember, this is in the hills and there is a steep, steep drop beyond the curve). Scared almost to death he starts to pray, begging the Lord for his life.

He hasn't come out of shock, when just before he hits the curve, a hand appears through the window and moves the wheel! The car makes the curve safely and continues on the road to the next bend. The guy, now paralysed in terror, watches how the hand appears every time they are
before a curve and moves the steering wheel just enough to get the car around each bend.

Finally, the guy sees lights ahead. Gathering his courage he wrenches open the door of the silent, slowly moving car, scrambles out and runs as hard and fast as he can towards the lights.

It's a small town. Wet and in shock goes to a roadside bar, which is open, and asks for a drink. They find some Whisky and give him a shot and he starts telling whoever will listen about the horrible experience he's just been through. A silence envelops everybody when they realise the guy isn't drunk, and is really frightened - he's crying and shaking. So they give him more booze and talk about what they should do, whether to call the police or find a priest, or what.

But just then two strangers walked into the bar. And one says to the other, Look, that's the fecking eejit that got in the car when we were pushing it."

At The Welfare Office

A guy walks into the local welfare office, marches straight up to the counter and says, "Hi... You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job."

The social worker behind the counter says, "Your timing is excellent. We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur/bodyguard for his nymphomaniac daughter.

You'll have to drive around in his Mercedes, but he'll supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be provided. You'll be expected to escort her on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges. You'll have a two-bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting salary is £100,000 a year".

The guy says, "You're bullshttin' me!"
The social worker says, "Yeah, well, you started it."

Joke - Court

An 80 year old woman was arrested for shop lifting.
When she went before the judge he asked her, "What did you steal?”
She replied: a can of peaches.
The judge asked her why she had stolen them and she replied that she was hungry.
The judge then asked her how many peaches were in the can. She replied 6.
The judge then said, "I will give you 6 days in jail.”
Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment the woman’s husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say something. He said, “What is it?”

The husband said “She also stole a can of peas."

Philosophy

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The students laughed. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled everything else. "Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.”The rocks are the important things -- your family, your partner, your health, and your children -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else. The small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. “Take care of the rocks first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

But then...A rugby-playing student then took the jar which the other students and the professor agreed was full, and proceeded to pour in a glass of beer. Of course the beer filled the remaining spaces within the jar making the jar truly full.

This proves: that no matter how full your life is, there is always room for a beer.
